Falling film evaporator (FFE) is a high-performance and cost-effective device that can concentrate solutions, especially with heat-sensitive components. It is a type of heat exchanger that uses a shell and tube design to evaporate the solvent from the feed solution. The feed is pumped into the evaporator from the top and uniformly dispersed throughout the heating tubes of the device. The feed flows downwards by gravity as a continuous film along the tube walls, where it is heated by the heating medium on the outside of the tubes. The solvent evaporates and leaves behind a concentrated solution that exits from the bottom of the tubes. The solvent vapor is separated from the solution in a gas-liquid separator and can be recovered or reused.
